"Skip the Bag, Save the River"
Beginning January 1, 2010, District businesses that sell food or alcohol must charge 5 cents for each disposable paper or plastic carryout bag.
The business keeps 1 cent, or 2 cents if it offers a rebate when the customer brings their own bag. And the remaining 3 or 4 cents go to the new Anacostia River Protection Fund. DDOE will administer this fund.
The District Department of the Environment (DDOE) has posted a new webpage for the DC Bag Law (official name, Anacostia River Clean Up and Protection Act of 2009 ). This webpage includes a “Frequently Asked Questions” section, two downloadable posters for businesses, and a double-sided leaflet for use in a reusable bag. The webpage link is green.dc.gov/bags
The DDOE is asking that businesses print and hang the Skip the Bag, Save the River posters in your store and windows at your earliest convenience. There is room at the bottom of the poster to add your corporate logo and appropriate text, such as “Thank you for shopping at _______________”. Two posters are available for download – a poster regarding the five-cent fee and a second poster advertising the voluntary credit program.
By hanging the posters, you will help not only your cashiers and customers, but the neighborhood businesses as well.

Satin Doll, D.C. ‘Party Animal’ Elephant, Donated to Ready Willing & Working
When Lisa Saunier and her husband Carl Nielsen moved to Capitol Hill in 2003 they brought with them the Duke Ellington inspired “Satin Doll” a glamorous member of the Washington D.C. “Party Animals” Public Art Exhibit that paraded through the city in 2002. After receiving approval from the Capitol Hill Restoration Society, Satin Doll found her home in the front yard of the Saunier/Nielsen resident, at 6th and D Street SE, along with a note on the fence introducing herself to the neighborhood. Over the years Capitol Hill residents were often treated to Satin Doll’s fashionable side, including an array of festive Easter bonnets and, Saunier’s personal favorite, a furry Donkey costume for Halloween.
Now almost 6 years later, Saunier and Nielsen have moved back to their home state of Massachusetts, and on their fence, once again, is a note from Satin Doll. It reads: “Dear Friends, Thank you for your attention and kind thoughts and visits. I am moving on now to benefit Ready, Willing & Working (though the BID). When you see those guys in blue, tell them THANKS for keeping our neighborhood looking great, ok? Love, Satin Doll”
Upon receiving Saunier’s generous donation, the Ready, Willing & Working team lifted all 900 lbs of Satin Doll into the Capitol Hill BID truck, promising to clean and take good care of the glamorous elephant.
Satin Doll will be part of the 2nd Annual Magic & Miracles at The Mansion on O Street, December 17, (see the article below) as an auction item benefiting Ready, Willing &Working.
At the conclusion of this post, in honor of Satin Doll, is a youtube video of Duke Ellington playing the iconic song.

Capitol Hill Dentist Goes to Jamaica to Clean, Fill and Extract, for Free
Dr. Aston Greaves has been practicing dentistry on Barracks Row for over 25 years. Rodney Smith of Capitol Hill Sporting Goods & Apparel calls him a “corner stone of the community.”
So when Smith learned of Greaves shutting his doors for a week to take two staff dentists to Clarendon, Jamaica to perform pro bono services throughout the community, Smith immediately forwarded the Jamaica Observer article to the Capitol Hill BID entitling Greaves a “true hero on Barracks Row.”
“Not many people would do what he did - it is a very cool thing, and he is even going back next year to do root canals.” Smith said.
Greaves relayed that it was a “great experience, very gratifying” adding that he couldn’t wait to go back next year. Ingrid Brown reports in “Clarendon Resident Get Free Dental Care”(linked) that “On the first day they set up operation in the dental clinic at the Chapleton Hospital, Oonagh [Greaves’ wife] said the three dentists saw over 60 patients.” Brown interviewed Dr. Mitchell Nedab, one Greaves’ fellow dentists, who said “it was rather fulfilling to be giving his service to help those who would normally not be able to afford quality private dental care. He expressed satisfaction at how appreciative the patients he had seen were.”
Today Dr. Aston Greaves and his staff can be found at The Washington Dental Health Care Clinic, 729 8th Street SE, or reached at (202) 546-2202.

Barracks Row is a "Great Green Place"
Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells spoke with Urban Land Institutes Uwe Brandes about what makes Barracks Row a sustainable neighborhood. "It's a concept I would call 5 minute living, from here you can get to fresh food at Eastern Market, great restaurants along Barracks Row, I can also get on the Metro here...With the Metro, biking, walking, and the Circulator bus, this is probably one of the more multi modal neighborhoods in the country."
